Lucia Zarate: Shortest Woman Ever Recorded

Lucia Zarate

aka Shortest Woman Ever Recorded, aka The Puppet-woman, aka Mexican Lilliputian, aka Lightest person who ever lived

Lucia Zarate was born in Mexico in 1864 weighing only eight ounces and was only seven inches in height. By adulthood she stood only 26 1/2 inches high and weighed only 13 pounds-- she was lighter than most house cats; hence, she is also recognized by Guinness as the lightest person who ever lived.

Zarate's life ended tragically in 1890 when the train she was on became stranded in the Rocky Mountains during a heavy snowstorm. The 26-year-old was exposed to cold temperatures and died of hypothermia.

Olympic Trivia

The end of the Beijing Olympics is drawing near so this may be my last Olympic trivia.

Q: What was unique about marathon Olympic gold medalist Abebe Bikila?

A: He won his first marathon BAREFOOT/ He was the first athlete to win 2 consecutive gold medals at marathon. (source:paulsquiz.com)

Bio:

Abebe Bikila (August 7, 1932 – October 25, 1973) was a two-time Olympic marathon champion from Ethiopia. A stadium in Addis Ababa is named in his honor...

In 1969, during civil unrest in Addis, Bikila was driving his Volkswagen Beetle when he had to swerve to avoid a group of protesting students. He lost control of his car and it landed in a ditch, trapping him. He was freed out of the car but the accident left him quadriplegic...

In October 1973, Abebe Bikila died in Addis Ababa at the age of 41 from a cerebral hemorrhage, a complication related to the accident of four years earlier.

Quotes:

*After the race, when Bikila was asked why he had run barefoot, he replied,

“I wanted the world to know that my country, Ethiopia, has always won with determination and heroism."

*As regards the accident that left him quadriplegic, he said:

"Men of success meet with tragedy. It was the will of God that I won the Olympics, and it was the will of God that I met with my accident. I accepted those victories as I accept this tragedy. I have to accept both circumstances as facts of life and live happily."(source: wikipedia)

When I started this Olympic trivia series, I really intended to end it with Abebe Bikila's story, because for me his attitude is worth emulating. Yes, in good times & in bad, we should maintain gratefulness to God no matter what.

Where Y'at, NADIA COMANECI ?

Nadia Elena Comaneci (originally Comăneci /ko.mə'neʧʲ/; born November 12, 1961) is a Romanian gymnast, winner of five Olympic gold medals, and the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastic event...

At the age of 14, Comaneci became one of the stars of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. During the team portion of the competition, her routine on the uneven bars was scored at a 10.0. It was the first time in modern Olympic gymnastics history that the score had ever been awarded. The scoreboards were not even equipped to display scores of 10.0—so Nadia's perfect marks were reported on the boards as 1.00 instead. Over the course of the Olympics, Comaneci would earn six additional 10s, en route to capturing the all-around, beam and bars titles and a bronze medal on the floor exercise. source: wikipedia

70 year-old Grandmother Gives Birth to Twins

Omkari Singh Panwar, a 70-year-old grandmother from India gave birth to twins - a boy and girl - via Caesarean section, setting the world record for the oldest mother.

Omraki and her 77-year-old husband Charan Singh Panwar, a retired farmer, were desperate to have a son and heir to the family's smallholdings. In order to pay for an IVF treatment needed by his wife to conceive, Charan sold his buffalos, mortgaged his land, spent his life savings and took out a loan.

The couple already has two grown-up daughters, and five grandchildren, but needed a son to fulfill certain religious functions as mandated by Hindu tradition. Per Hindu practice and belief, only sons are allowed to kindle the funeral pyre of their late parents and to assist in the soul salvation.

Full Report on Omkari's childbirth.

Louise Brown: First Test Tube Baby

Born: July 25, 1978

In the 70's, in vitro fertilization, or IVF was hailed as a breakthrough in the fields of medicine and science. Through a planned caesarean section, Louise Joy Brown, the first test tube baby , was born on July 25, 1978 in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. Her birth, videotaped and became top news worldwide, gave a flicker of hope to many infertile couples around the world. However, not a few were skeptical about the IVF's future implications and ill-use; it also became a source of heated dispute within medical and religious groups alike. The religious sect still raises issues against physicians for "playing God" by practicing the IVF procedure.

Louise's parents, Lesley and John Brown had decided to seek the help of gynecologist Patrick Steptoe and physiologist Robert Edwards after nine years of failed conceptions due to Lesley's blocked fallopian tubes. Four years later, the Brown's next child, Natalie, was also conceived through IVF. She was the 40th IVF baby in the world and in 1999 became the first "test-tube" baby to give birth.

Louise, 28, married 37 year old Wesley Mullinder in 2004. Like Natalie's daughter Casey, Louise's son, Cameron John Mullinder, born on 21 December 2006, was also conceived naturally and without IVF.

In 2003, in her first public appearance as an adult, at Bourn Hall, near Cambridge, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her birth, Louise said she hoped to have children without resorting to IVF although she would have the treatment too, if necessary.

She likewise narrated incidents wherein schoolmates would ask her if she was born in the laboratory. "I thought it was something peculiar to me. I thought I was abnormal," she confided. At times, she would feel "completely alone". Nonetheless, she remains proud to have been the world's first successful "test-tube" baby but she admits media attention makes her uncomfortable. The public's fascination over her was as unrelenting, to which she quoted: "I don't feel any more special than anyone else. I just get on with my life. Just normal- I just plod along".

In her recent interview following the birth of her child, Louise expressed belief that "the science that created her has become a soulless conveyor belt ...". She thinks "it is wrong for parents to use science to choose the sex of their children unless it's for medical reasons...". Continuing, she remarked that she was teased at school because she was a "test tube" baby.

Currently, Louise is an administrator with a shipping firm, a task she shall be putting off until her son, Cameron, is older. Previously for three years, she had a stint as a nursery nurse in Bristol.

If she so desired, an opulent life would have been just within her grasp as offers from newspapers and television journals to sell her story were never scarce. But the eldest of the "test tube" babies, whose life has had been closely monitored by the medical scientists and the world, opted to lead a life of modesty and privacy.

Louise Joy Brown has had plodded along her own life level-headed and sans any signs of abnormalities, as opposed to all the initial criticisms and skepticisms surrounding the technology by which she was conceived.
