Daniel Lewis, or Dan to his family, is only one of the many people who are driven to suicide due to problems and overwhelming sadness. Many people who engage in such behavior often think that death is the only solution to their current dilemmas. They may also be diagnosed with Major Depression.
People who suffer from Major Depression are often preoccupied with thoughts of dying unable to stop thinking about it. They may also have feelings of worthlessness and guilt even when there are no reasons for them to feel this way. These beleaguering emotions distract them and they could not think with clear heads. In October 1973, Abebe Bikila died in Addis Ababa at the age of 41 from a cerebral hemorrhage, a complication related to the accident of four years earlier.

The diagnosis of DID does not necessarily mean that the person will forever have it. Although prognosis may not be very good, it is still possible for someone who has DID to be able to function normally after having undergone therapy. The general goal of intervention is to integrate alter-egos so that they may be lessened and may form a single personality. The alters then are geared towards acknowledging the roles of one another and working on resolving the trauma that the person has experienced.
Although there are people who suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder, it should be noted however, that not everyone who experiences childhood trauma would automatically develop separate personalities as the resilience of the individual also plays an important role in the process. In fact, a few decades ago, the number of DID cases worldwide was merely a little bit higher than a hundred.

But why does an individual develop Dissociative Identity Disorder and how does this process occur?
When a person, usually a child, is subjected to extreme and repeated sexual abuse, she may create alters in order to escape the pain that she experiences in real life. When the child forms a fantasy world, she disconnects herself from what is real and engages in fantastical thoughts about being another person. When this happens frequently, it may result to an aborted development of the child’s sense of self. The sense of self then breaks down into many different selves that have their own identities, as the child is unable to integrate all of them into one single person. This is then the time that alter-egos may evolve from the child’s experience of trauma and would take the form of the abuser. It could also be that the part of the child that holds all the happy memories would evolve into another “self” or that the unreleased anger would evolve into an aggressive identity. Omkari Panwar and her husband Charan Singh Panwar, 77, from Uttar Pradesh, North India, underwent IVF in a bid to produce a male heir to carry on the family name and to take over the family plot of land. Though they already have two daughters who are in their thirties, the elderly couple still desired for a son as daughters are not allowed to inherit property in the country.
They were so elated when in June, Mrs Panwar gave birth to twins - one a boy. She even made it to the world records for being the oldest mother.

Here's something we all could learn from. According to research, our children’s health and nutrition are badly compromised when we give them junk diet as early as three years old. Findings show that, by the time they go to school, the damage has already been done as they emerge the worst-behaved in class and the least to perform in tests.
The study on the effects of junk food on kids’ health and nutrition was conducted by the University of London’s Institute for Education. It revealed that the eating habits generate a long lasting influence on our body regardless of later changes in our diet. The study also disclosed that children’s diet at a later age does not have a remarkable significance on their performance.
Parents and guardians are advised to give children a well-balanced diet from an early age for the young ones to accomplish well in school.

Alter-egos have their own thinking style, separate life histories and individual behaviors. They are basically break away identities from the host personality and the only thing that really binds them to the real person is that they share the same body. In mind, thought and heart however, they are different. It is possible that alter-egos are aware of whatever is going on in the host’s life even when they are not taking over the host’s body. On the other hand, in many cases the host is oblivious to the existence of alter-egos. One common feature of Dissociative Identity Disorder is memory gaps. Due to these holes in the person’s memory, it is possible that the individual may experience disorganization of the self.
The emergence of alter-egos could occur anytime. Ordinarily though, there are specific circumstances or situations that would trigger their appearance. These situations are normally connected to the trauma that they have experienced. (to be continued...)

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), more commonly referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder, is the occurrence of more than one "self". Here, there is a host, or the actual person who has been diagnosed with the problem. There is also the presence of an alter-ego, or the other "self".
It is interesting to note that alter-egos can range from one to a hundred. For more common cases however, the number of alter-egos do not exceed ten. These alters may take different forms. They could take the personality of the abuser or be the avenger of the abused. They may also be the keeper of family secrets or the expresser of forbidden desires that the host must not show to the world. They could be younger than the actual person or even of opposite sex. In Dissociative Identity Disorder, alters can virtually take any age, any sex and any characteristics. (to be continued...)

In January 6, 1994 at a practice session during the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, a mysterious man wielding a police baton clubbed Kerrigan on the right knee. As a result, Kerrigan was forced to drop out of the competition and her teammate, Tonya Harding, won the event and was consequently placed on the Olympic team. Kerrigan recovered in time to compete for the U.S. at the Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway; and in February, joined Harding at the Olympic Village. By this time, Kerrigan's assailant has confessed to the police that the persons who hired him were Tonya Harding's husband and her bodyguard. Tonya Harding later admitted to covering up the attack.
Is crime a part of sports strategy? Just recently, on the first day of the Olympics game, a Chinese man stabbed to death Todd Bachman while leaving his wife Barbara in critical condition. After committing the crime, the knifeman then jumped to his death from the 130ft-high second floor of The Drum Tower where the incident happen. Their daughter Elisabeth, a former U.S. Olympian, who was also there as the assault happened was unharmed but was as bewildered as the other onlookers. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics took place in the Chinese capital in front of a global audience of billions. The Games began at exactly 8.08pm on the 8th day of the 8th month (August) in 2008.

The Ancient Olympic Games, originally referred to as simply the Olympic Games (Greek: Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες; Olympiakoi Agones) were a series of athletic competitions held between various city-states of Ancient Greece. They began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, and celebrated until 393 AD. The prizes were olive wreaths, palm branches and woollen ribbons.
Legendary origin
The origins of the Ancient Olympic Games are unknown, but several legends and myths have survived. One of these involved Pelops, king of Olympia and eponymous hero of the Peloponnesus, to whom offerings were made during the games. The Christian Clement of Alexandria asserted, "[The] Olympian games are nothing else than the funeral sacrifices of Pelops." That myth tells of how Pelops' overcame the King and won the hand of his daughter Hippodamia with the help of Poseidon, his old lover, a myth linked to the later fall of the house of Atreus and the sufferings of Oedipus.
A myth tells of the hero Herakles, or Heracles, who won a race at Olympia and then decreed that the race should be re-enacted every four years, while another claims that Zeus had instated the festival after his defeat of the Titan Cronus. Yet another tells of King Iphitos of Elis, who consulted the Pythia Oracle at Delphi – to try and save his people from war in the 9th century BC. The prophetess advised him to organize games in honour of the gods. The Spartan adversary of Iphitos then decided to stop fighting during these games, which were called Olympic, after the sanctuary of Olympia where they were held. Had they been named after Mount Olympus, the mountain on which the Greek gods were said to live, they would have been called Olympian games rather than Olympic. The favorite story is that Heracles celebrated cleaning the Augean Stables by building Olympia with help from Athena.
Whatever the origin, the games were held to be one of the two central rituals in Ancient Greece, the other being the Eleusinian Mysteries.
Another possibility for the actual origin of the Games is that they essentially 'evolved' from Funeral Games.
